AsΓ lo indica una investigaciΓ³n de la Universidad de California, Riverside, que muestra la capacidad de los guisantes de ojos negros para atraer bacterias beneficiosas y fijadoras de nitrΓ³geno, lo que ayuda al agricultor a βevitar la necesidad de fertilizantes costosos y daΓ±inos para el medio ambienteβ.
Se diseñó una rotación ecológica cuatrienal: trigo-girasol-guisante-habas.
Las habas en floración se incorporaban al suelo.
Cada uno de los 4 años, en los cultivos de trigo y de guisante se estableció un experimento con 9 repeticiones y dos tratamientos: (1) Testigo desherbado, con escardas manuales periódicas una vez contadas las hierbas y (2) Testigo sin desherbar, para el seguimiento de las hierbas. En cada repetición, ambos tratamientos ocuparon una superficie 2,25 m2 y se situaron uno al lado del otro. Al final del periodo del cultivo se comparó la cosecha entre parcelas desherbadas y sin desherbar.
